  • Blackout: Send in your funds…

Blackout: Sending in the money you raised!

Thank you for raising money as part of your Blackout!

There are a few different ways you can send the money you have raised or collected to us.

    1. Through JustGiving…

If you set up a JustGiving page for your Blackout then you don’t need to do much at all! The money given by people who have sponsored and supported you should automatically come through to us through JustGiving – which keeps things pretty simple!

    2. Using the form on this page…

Use the form opposite (desktop) or below (mobile) to send in the total amount you have raised. Just type in the amount you’re sending to us in the blank box and click the button! If you collected sponsorship using the sponsor forms we sent you, it’d be great if you could send the completed ones to us. Send them in with a letter outlining how your Blackout went, what you did and how much you raised (and that you’ve sent the funds in online). Post the letter to us at Open Doors UK + I, PO Box 6, Witney , Oxon OX29 6WG.

    3.Send us a cheque…

You can also send us a cheque of the total amount you have raised (please don’t send cash in the post). If you could write a little letter outlining a bit about your Blackout along with the cheque that’d be ace. Post it to PO Box 6, Witney, Oxon, OX29 6WG. If you have any completed sponsorship forms, include those as we can claim gift aid on the amounts pledged. Please make cheques payable to ‘Open Doors’.

And lastly, thank you very much. Your prayers and support really do make a difference.

Send in your Blackout sponsorship money!

    How Blackout works…

    1.Choose to lose: Sign up!

What do you love? Your x-Box, phone, chocolate, fast food, Instagram, listening to music, sport, playing guitar, watching telly? Could you get sponsored to give it up for a short time to stand with those who have to give up everything to follow Jesus? Sign up now and we’ll send you an awesome pack to help you lose what you love!

    2.Raise money, prayer and awareness…

Set up a JustGiving page or use the sponsor form we send you to raise money to support Christians around the world who have lost family, home, friends, safety and freedom because of their love of Jesus. We’ll send you resources to help you raise money, and to also reflect, pray and tell others what you are doing and why!

    3. Lose what you love…

For up to 48 hours (or longer), starting from our launch weekend on 23-25 October, join with hundreds of others by giving up something you love to stand with those prepared to lose everything for their faith in Jesus. Get inspired to live out your faith with greater courage and conviction!

    What your money could achieve…

By getting sponsored to lose what you love you could raise money to achieve some amazing things for Christians who have lost out because of their faith in Jesus.

    • Every £7 could enable a woman to attend empowerment training.
    • Every £20 could provide a widow with a loan to buy seeds for crops and other farming equipment so that she can become self-sufficient.
    • Every £60 helps provide access to a safe house for a believer fleeing extreme persecution.
    • £144 could provide a kit of clothes and blankets to help two persecuted families survive the upcoming winter.
    • £346 could provide immediate trauma care for a woman in Nigeria who has been persecuted.

Set a target and see what your money could achieve…

    Join the Blackout…

    On your own…

Spend up to 48 hours going without something you love! Sign up now, kick-start your fundraising by setting up a Justgiving page and share it with your friends and family. Check out the downloads, then post the Blackout image we send you to your Instagram profile telling the world that you’re joining the Blackout. Challenge three other people to lose what they love and to join the Blackout too (nominate them and tag them on your post). Your friends and family will be rallying around to support you in no time!

    As a group…

It might seem a bit daunting to lose the one thing you love for up to 48 hours, so why not encourage your youth group, CU, small group or even church to Blackout with you? We’re producing some special leader downloads to help you scale up your Blackout. Set up a prayer room, run a prayer event and spend time together doing some fundraising activities (like holding a bake sale). And of course, you can still get sponsored – set up a group Justgiving page and ask your friends, family and church to support you!

Blackout: Why lose what you love?

Persecuted Christians often have to give up everything to follow Jesus: their families, homes, jobs, friends, freedoms and, sometimes, even their lives.

In rural Vietnam, where Poh lives, Christian converts are secret believers as leaving the traditional village religion is seen as a betrayal to family and community. Those who choose Jesus face discrimination, threats and violence.

Poh was a teenager when his girlfriend told him about Jesus and he became a Christian.

When Poh’s dad found out, he gathered his relatives and the chief of the village. They tried to force Poh to stop believing in Jesus. For hours they taunted, mocked and pressured him.

At one point, someone tried to tie Poh up. “My father picked up a rock to throw at me. Other people were trying to stop my father from killing me,” he recalls.

But Poh stood firm. The threats and harassment continued – villagers warned Poh that his father would kill him. Still, Poh didn’t bend, saying “No. No, I won’t give up. I have come this far. I don’t want to go back. I will continue to believe in Christ.”

Poh lost family, home, community and a secure future because of Jesus. Could you lose what you love for up to 48 hours to raise money and prayer for courageous believers like Poh who have lost everything because of their love of Jesus?

    • Blackout

Blackout 2019 is coming. Get the 25-27 October in your diary now! We’ll be producing a new, free Blackout pack to help you spend 12, 24 or 48 hours offline. You’ll be able to pre-order this pack in the next few months!

      What is Blackout?
Blackout is a sponsored 48 hour digital fast for persecuted Christians. That means a whole weekend without your phone, the internet, social networking or anything involving the web.

Around the world Christians have no voice. Millions are persecuted, threatened, beaten, arrested, tortured and some even killed for their choice to follow Jesus. They are being silenced. By getting sponsored to go quiet online, you’ll raise money for Christians in Syria who have fled horrific persecution and are still homeless, needing food, medicine and shelter. Plus you can use the time you’re not spending on your phone in prayer, making a massive noise before God for your persecuted family.

Want to do a Blackout now?
Although we’re still planning the 2019 Blackout weekend and materials, you can still hold a Blackout whenever you like. Scroll down to sign up for doing a Blackout now and you’ll get access to a whole bunch of our 2018 downloads (we’ll be creating new, fresh resources in the next few months).

      Why go quiet? Baseem’s story…

Earlier this year, a 27-year-old Egyptian Christian called Bassem was killed because he had a tattoo of a cross on his wrist. He was walking home from work when he was stopped by two armed men. They’d spotted his tattoo, asked if he was a Christian and then shot him. His murderers then threatened to kill more Christians.

Violence against Christians has been increasing in Egypt, but it’s not just about north Africa. In Syria, where money raised from Blackout in 2018 will go, Christians have been forced to flee homes, faced unspeakable violence and seen their communities destroyed. But even in the darkness, the church is still shining.

One Christian in Aleppo, a city devastated by the war, says: “But we live in God. We stayed with our faith. We prayed as a family here. We went to the church. I don’t believe that we should just travel and run out. Of course we thought a lot about leaving… but when I started to pack my bags, I wanted to stay. I love my country. I love my people. I have a mission to stay here and help people.”

So, put down the phone. Log out of Instagram and help us raise money for change and a massive noise in prayer before God! Could you and your mates pray non-stop for 12, 24 or 48 hours? Could you get sponsored and raise enough to help provide relief for Syrian families or help fund a small business loan so someone can start earning a living again in Syria? With no phone to distract you anything is possible! Register and you’ll get access to a bunch of downloadable resources and we’ll also send you our new Mini Guide, stickers and much more…

      How to do a Blackout

Ok, so here’s the rules… It’s pretty simple. Blackout is a fast from the web, social media and your smartphone. It’s about switching off to make a big noise in prayer to God for those silenced for following Jesus. The point is to get rid of the distractions. So…

      • No social networking
      • No emails, texts, instant messaging
      • No web streaming of games, TV or music (that means no Spotify)
      • No browsing online

That’s it. Simples. You can make it more extreme and go fully quiet by choosing not to speak, limiting your diet, locking yourself away or you could even give up something else you really love too. But Blackout is essentially a challenge to stay silent online.

At the start of your fast, seal away your smartphone or tablet in a padded envelope and write the date and time you can re-open it on the envelope. Then walk away. Your Blackout has begun.

      When

Blackout for 24-48 hours between 26-28 October 2018. The fast starts officially at 7pm on Friday 12th and ends at 7pm on Sunday the 12th. (Although we’re advertising these dates you can do a Blackout whenever you like and for anything from 12-48 hours too!).

    • Blackout Tour

In the run up to the last Blackout we travelled the length and breadth of England on our Blackout tour. We spoke at church and youth services about silenced, hidden, Christians and helped people to connect with their persecuted family through worship, prayer and the Bible.

If you’d like us to come to your church or event or want to chat through the possibilities then get in touch. Drop us an email at youth@opendoorsuk.org and we’ll get back to you asap. Even if we can’t provide a quality speaker we’ll definitely be able to give you advice and ideas on structuring and planning a Blackout themed service and event.

    • We support people who are beaten, tortured,
imprisoned, falsely accused, and hated simply for following Jesus.
