An extremist Hindu group in Nepal have published a statement telling Christian leaders to leave Nepal and converts to Christianity to return to Hinduism.
The statement was released after the country’s government adopted a secular constitution but this group believe Nepal should be a Hindu state. They say that Christianity is the main cause of the disruption of the religious unity of the nation.
The group were allegedly responsible for the bombing of two churches and the attempted bombing of a third church after calls for Nepal to become a Hindu state were rejected on 14 September. They have stated that their mission is to eradicate Christianity from Nepal.
Christians have also expressed concerns about the new constitution. Attempting to convert someone to another religion was already prohibited in Nepal, but the recent amendments to the constitution mean that anything perceived as ‘evangelistic’ could be punishable by law. Christians fear this could eventually render all Christian activity illegal.
